WhatsApp marketing in the USA in 2026: what's paused and what still works
Meta paused WhatsApp marketing templates to US numbers. Here is what that means, which messages still deliver, and how to reach American customers instead.
If you plan to send WhatsApp marketing campaigns to customers in the United States, there is one thing to know first: since 1 April 2025, Meta has paused the delivery of marketing template messages to US phone numbers (numbers starting with +1 and a US area code). At the time of writing, Meta has not announced an end date.
That does not make WhatsApp useless in the US. It changes which messages you can send and how you start conversations.
What exactly is paused
WhatsApp business messages fall into categories. Only one of them is affected.
| Message type | Example | Can you send it to US numbers? |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing template | "20% off this weekend" | No, paused by Meta |
| Utility template | Booking confirmation, order update | Yes |
| Authentication template | One-time passcode | Yes |
| Service reply | Answering a customer who messaged you | Yes, free inside 24 hours |
A marketing template sent to a US number fails with an error instead of being delivered. On Dizitallink, failed messages are not charged, so you will not lose coins, but your campaign will not reach those customers.
Why Meta paused it
Meta said it wanted to improve the experience for people in the US while it works on how marketing messages are delivered there. WhatsApp is growing fast in the US, and Meta is protecting users from receiving too many promotions too early.
What still works for US customers
1. Let customers message you first
When a customer sends you a message, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Inside it you can reply with any normal message, including information about offers they asked about, and Meta does not charge for these replies.
Ways to get US customers to message you:
- A "Chat with us on WhatsApp" button on your website
- A QR code on menus, receipts, room cards and packaging
- A wa.me link in your email signature, Instagram bio and Google Business Profile
2. Click-to-WhatsApp ads
Ads on Facebook and Instagram can open a WhatsApp chat with your business instead of a website. When someone starts a chat from one of these ads, Meta opens a 72-hour free entry point window, during which messages are free. For a business that wants to reach many new US customers, this is the most effective route right now.
3. Utility messages
Booking confirmations, reminders, order and delivery updates and receipts are utility messages, and they still deliver. They must be genuinely transactional: a "booking confirmed" message that also pushes a discount will be classed as marketing.
Example: a hotel promoting to US guests
A hotel that wanted to send an offer to 20,000 US contacts cannot do it with a marketing template today. A plan that works:
- Run a Click-to-WhatsApp ad targeted at the US, with the offer in the ad.
- Answer every chat quickly. Dizitallink's AI replies in seconds, even at 3 am.
- Send booking confirmations and check-in reminders as utility templates.
- Keep your opted-in list ready for when Meta lifts the pause.
Other countries are not affected
The pause applies only to US numbers. Marketing templates still deliver in India, the UK, the UAE and every other market. You can see each country's rate on our pricing page.
Meta's rules change. Before planning a large US campaign, check the latest status in Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform changelog or ask our team.
